"Just Suppose" features a complex base with JP Paul's signature multi-layered, controlled-random abstractions on heavily distressed canvas. Similar works represent the majority of his mixed-media painted works since 2015, but only recently has he begun to add abstract-figurative elements. The artist then combines the textural plane with minimalist graphic imagery that drives his subtle messaging, leaving plenty of space for contemplation and self-consideration by the viewer. In this case, the soft innocence of the content clashes with the harsh realities of the context, not unlike the world we are presenting to newborns today.
No political statement is implicit in the work, as evidenced by both the ambiguous figure and neutral palette. Instead, the artist suggests dialogue is necessary to determine how societies plan to balance critical issues such as women's reproductive rights, environmental catastrophes, global peace, and society's support for children and young families far beyond birth. Indeed, in the months when this painting was hung in the artist's studio, no work garnered more commentary nor sparked as many discussions.
